Title: Week 5 @ Presbyterian
Post by: valpofb16 on September 25, 2022, 01:13:47 PM
Valpo comes off a grueling 4 game schedule and comes out 2-2. Next the Beacs travel to #130 (last) Presbyterian. Fun tidbit Beacs are rated higher than Bucknell now.

Presbyterian comes off two shellackings from Western Carolina and Davidson only win was a 1 score game against #697 overall VA Lynchburg. Massey calling for a 2 score victory.

Prediction: Valpo 28 Presbyterian 7

Valpo should win this game comfortably and it's fortunate that the SD game had some mishaps towards the end which can have the coaching staff focus on and that the opponent is weak with a game sitting between a big win over a traditionally strong league program and the teams rival the following game. The bye week may also help the team not feel their oats too much.

Presbyterian seems to have gone away from the "no punt" option.

Coach Kelley left so that would make sense

I didn't realize that (and should have checked the obvious answer).

Thanks

WR Jalen Jones for pres had 239 yards and 5 TDs against Valpo last season.

Well he's back with a Minnesota State Xfer QB who had a PWO from LSU. RB had 1200 yards last season

Valpo just knocked off the #2 team in the preseason poll and by virtue of the schedule, they do not play #1 Davidson.

If Valpo wants to contend at the top of the PFL this year, they should make quick work of the Blue Hose like Davidson did this past weekend.

Valpo 28-13

If Valpo is who we think they are, then Presbyterian should be a ham and egged opponent.

34-13 Beacos.

Glad this game is not this weekend.   With Ian hitting Carolina coast on Friday... no way this game  could be played this weekend. The gents play at Morehead on Saturday.  I see the Stetson game at San Diego is canceled.

I haven't seen if Stetson shut down for the storm. It really wasn't forecast to go where it went on the East Central part of the state. I guess they'd fly out of Orlando Airport which is probably a mess scheduling wise.

Answering my own post...Orlando Intl is only opening at noon today and, in short, they have to get all the planes back to the airport it would be difficult to re-schedule a flight to SD anytime today.

Presbyterian 10 Morehead State 14.

Presbyterian won the second half and shut out Morehead after halftime. Improving weekly, guys are back who gave Valpo problems last year.

Fox hopefully has the guys focused on the product and not the W-L record

Two deep today.

Appel still listed as the starter. Think between Illinois State and second half of San Diego Kaplan is the better player right now.

Appel has some very real untapped potential. Could be a lot of short leash this season as he develops

Update:

7-0 Beacs

Long seam to Vickers. Presbyterian can't run the ball for positive yardage. Should be over by half

7-7

Jalen Jones scores his 6th touchdown against Valpo in 12 months

14-7 Beacs

Punched it in at GL. Let's key on that Jones fellow

14-14 Tie

Beacons gashed on a screen 3rd & Long. Having major issues with the backup QB

21-14 Presbyterian

Backup QB is best player on the field. Breaking pocket making throws downfield, Valpo secondary getting out athleted by Presbyterian. Just a complete defensive meltdown.

21-21

Appel big play to Davis. Valpo needs two stops to win this game.

35-21 Beacs.

Touchdowns by Ross and Clarke, barring anything crazy they survive a bad first half defensive showing.

42-21 Beacs.

Dawson from 60

Defense shaky in first half. Better in 2nd half for sure and got the offense going as well.

PFL a little upside down today. Butler is shutting Dayton out and Marist is up over Stetson at the half.

I was afraid the stupid penalties were going to get us again but the adjustments at half were again amazing!  27-0 in the second half and when was the last time we missed an extra point?  Good, very solid all around effort!

Is it time to get excited about Valpo football!!
This coaching staff seems to really be putting the program in position to win week in and week out.

Fun game, and the 2 QB system worked quite well against Presby.  Good to see Dawson breakthrough again, with hope for similar in upcoming games.  Thanks for giving me bragging rights against a few guys from Presbyterian that I played college summer ball, back when they were D-2 :)

I cannot recall the last time VU had two high-quality QBs like this.

I saw from Appel's bio that he was Scout Team POY last year. For those in the know, was there a buzz about either of these guys last year, based on practice performances?

Kaplan came from Norcross (as did Jahni Clarke) which is a top 2-3 program in Georgia. Top 25 nationally.

That was a huge get.

In terms of Appel, just heard what you guys can see which he had a cannon
