General VU Discussion / Re: Day of Giving
April 27, 2023, 03:03:37 PM
I believe you are right, vu72...I do think the Alumni are upset with the name "Beacons" and the dog mascots. I think the increase is because of Mr.Powell and a percieved new attitude concerning the MBB program.

I understand from people close to the IU program that many wanted IU to hire A. J. Moye as an asst   Good catch for us.  Let's play ball!  Oh yes but get some players first.    :)

Expect former Indiana standout A.J. Moye to join Roger's Coaching staff.  Roger and A.J.  connected when they both played in Germany.  Moye was a contemporary with Roger playing in the Big 10.  He has been a high school coach and trainer in California for a number of years.  He has coached at both Oaks Christian and Oak Park High School and has trained a number of  NBA .  He also coached a number of future NBA players.

Do we know that Roger is after him?  Is the kid interested in VU?

I wouldn't bet on the Canadian guys before a good shooting local guy who is known well.  That isn't saying that the guys from up north can't cut it.  After the poor outside shooting we have seen in the last few years, can we ever get enough good shooters?  Other than Krikke from the inside, we have not had a good outside shooter since AP.

I would classify Marquis Kennedy as a has-been.  He was not that effective in his last year at Loyola as I remember.

After the bigger names find a new home, it takes a good, critical eye for coaches and staff to find the diamonds in the rough.  I would like to think that because we have a great need for not only quality but also quantity of new faces that Roger and Staff will look very carefully and any prospects.  I have confidence in the Rev's process especially with his past experience with mid-major and big time programs.  I think he definitely knows what he is looking for in new signees.

If we switched colors we would have to get some new dogs.  I wonder what the Rev thinks about our new name and stupid mascots?   Maybe we should have some therapy dogs instead.  Then both before games and at half-time fans could spend a little time with them while during the game the dogs would be relegated to our Bench area for players and Coaches.

I would think with the diminishing pool of D-1 portal players we will have to scour JUCO and D-2 or NAIA schools for trransfer opportunities.  I am sure there are a some good players at that level that could make it in D-1.

I would think we have a shot at perhaps a couple of players from a couple of those schools you list namely GCU or Georgetown.

Day of Giving totaled $1,083,920 which included 255 new givers.  Of the total over $170,000 was given towards MBB.  That sure sounds good but I wonder how these totals compare ot recent years numbers.  The MBB total would seem to br a result of Roger's hiring or maybe not.

I wonder if the "new" approach to battling the transfer portal situation with the big schools will be stepped up activity at the JUCO level.

You really don't believe that U of E's NIL money can compete with that of KU or Fightin' Illini.  I doubt that ANY mid-major school can compete with ANY P-5 Conference School in NIL dollars.  If so, I sure would like to know where. While Evansville usually leads the MVC in attendance, they have put out a very poor MBB program in recent years.  I still say there has to be more on this story   I can believe a new hot shot transfer comes in from the OVC.  But the new 4-star guy?  What's up, Doc?

Evansville gets a player rated 3 or 4 stars that turned down Kansas, Illinois among others??  Something doesn't sound right here.  There has got to be more on this story.

I'm disappointed that Zane didn't change his mind and return to VU.  I wonder if Roger had the chance to talk to him.  Perhaps Roger's game plan wasn't appealing to Zane.  In any event, let's move on!

You may be correct, historyman.  However if he chose, Ben would have many sources from which to pick that are currently in the Valpo "family" from which to glean info on our current/or potential staff situation and specifically on Roger  I find it hard to explain and understand that he at least would give an ear to the School that paid for his undergraduate education(and a good one too) and prepared him for as 5th season of playing college basketball.  But I guess that is today's college athlete.

I was making my reference to the assistant coaches...As for Powell...great hire.

Isn't it interesting that not too long ago many posters on this board wanted the new coaching staff to have nothing to do with with previous ties to VU saying we need to clean house, start fresh, etc.  Now all we hear is bring back the old guard.  It's rather amuzing.

Excellent message from   Dr. Small.  The University's recent hirings of Dr. Padilla, Dr. Small and now Roger have me excited about Valpo's future, especially in the area of inter-collegiate athletics.  I am proud to be an Alumnus and supporter of "dear old Valpo".
