Valpo Basketball / Re: Athletic Dept staff

Is it possible that the position of Assistant AD of Operations was a Graduate Student that graduated at semester? Not sure about the athletic trainer, unless the position at LBJI was due to potential he's a new dad, and needed/wanted to be home with his young family?

How many injuries are we supposed to struggle with? Yes, I could see a few transfers, but what I do expect is that Lottich will stick out the contract. I can't imagine Valpo buying out Lottich, when they are struggling to get money coming in, now that Covid isn't as financially draining as it was a year ago. Who do you think will transfer with certainty?

When MLB was hired, Dr. Harre was still the university president, so he had tons of support coming in. When Mark Heckler took over, it was all about growing the enrollment and look of the university, figuring that if he got the population enrollment of campus up that sports would get a following from that. MLB had to work on the FITT project, which got the field turf at Brown Field, moving soccer onto Brown Field, helped intramurals get fields specific for their needs, the tennis teams got improved courts, and the track team could finally train on a true track, instead of that mess that was at Eastgate Field, or having to find tracks at the local high schools to train on. He also got so many improvements made to the softball complex and Em Bauer Field. He did more than what we seem to give him credit for because the basketball team hasn't been consistently in the NCAA tournament generating more money for the university? He's also the AD that oversaw having to changeup how the ARC was presented with ESPN coming in to broadcast our games regularly on their platforms for web streaming.

I would say Mark did more with what he had in his hands than what Bill Steinbrecher did. He had to bring our facilities up to match what the conferences we were in wanted us to have. Mark did that without freaking out because he knew that he had people that could help him get there in his staff, alumni, and student body that would support it. He also did things to help the student athletes be proud of what they had instead of making it all about what they didn't have.

Thank you, Mark, for bringing more to Valpo for the students to work towards, instead of sitting back and enjoying what you had. You took risks in bettering Valpo athletics in 18 years in so many ways that a lot of ADs wouldn't have done without having the money first. You played a strong poker hand, and went all in when going all in looked like a bad idea.

I see that we have about 7-8 guys on this roster that will be replaced because they are seniors of some variety of time served, and then who knows if any of our freshmen transfer. I know Palesse was a redshirt, plus Connor Barrett, a sophomore, didn't really play, but I haven't followed the board as closely this season, but we have a lot of holes to fill for 2022-23, plus who knows if Lottich stays past 2023 with the new AD in July. I'll be reading the board a bit more frequently, but I have trying not to read all the board content as most of it reads the same as the game before.

Not true.  Only Anderson, Taylor and Gordon are done eligibility wise.  We have one signed guy right now. Kithier and King have another year available. I would expect Emil to graduate and get on with his engineering career though he is only a junior eligibility wise.

I'm still saying 7-8 guys from the roster are gone, because we have the three without eligibility, will Kithier want to play another season if he's still having lingering back issues, does King want another year, and will Woodyard or Young want to stay when they aren't playing at the level they thought they would?

Is it also possible that some of these online courses are also being taught by professors from community colleges that are in specific programming for trades or continuing education style programming that happens to lead to a degree? In those cases, the pay for the professor may even be more part-time side income.

Ah, that explains why Pitts didn't play after the first few games.  Congrats to her!  I remember that Dawn Vandermeer also had her college basketball career shortened, due to getting pregnant.

Dawn's daughter just turned 17. Dawn was a local kid. Her brother went to UIC around the same time.

ACU is still relatively new to Division 1, so their history at D-1 has a small sample size, but they will bring a better profile to the WAC than Chicago St. ever did for any conference it has  been a part of.

Have the Fitness Center named for her, and the check-in desk/assistant's desk named for her friend, Pat Broadstone. Both were long-time fixtures in Campus Recreation.

These schools probably also had a lot of program stars sit out the season. Not the fault of coaches to do this, so I'm calling this season a virtual wash for a lot of the small programs because of protocols canceling games, and players sitting out for family/personal reasons.

On The Horizon / Re: Jimmy Collins - former UIC coach

He was a good coach. He just ran into the problem of Illinois players being shooed out to the big programs, and Collins couldn't fix that due to UIC being in the U of I system.

The coaches aren't taking the shots but they are recruiting the players and they are responsible for assembling a roster that should be competitive

Yes, the coaches are recruiting these guys, but that's how the Russian Roulette of Recruiting is played...you get the right players or you don't, but the only ones who make the coaches look like they did their job are the players who have to step on the court, and do their job. Sadly, you can't fire players like you can coaches. You can only bench players, and hope they improve from the demotion, or they'll leave on their own?
#90
We can make all the excuses we want for how bad this game looked, and who should be at fault, but when the players don't move, don't show any kind of anything, and take horrible shot selection 101 like its a 3-credit course every semester, it's the players not putting in the time or effort to do their job on the court to be competitive. A coach can only do so much to flip the switch in game, but when the players aren't looking like they belong in D-I arenas, that's not the coaching staff's fault, since they aren't the ones taking the shots themselves.

The video camera link is added to the page schedule now. It's possible that Aaron waits until Gameday to add those links, in case something changes?

We had our struggles last in learning how to change the game-to-game mindset, since there wasn't a day to rest, just watch tape, and get a good walkthrough in, but the ladies fought last night. They will get their legs under them. Shay is a floor leader, and our quiet leading scorer. She will take over the game, if and when she needs to. Not have Profitt or a couple others in the trenches doesn't help matters, but the team we have the floor is handling themselves and the game well, especially in this season of unknown.

My FR year (1999-2000), the same thing happened.  I was at the party with athletes included from several sports, and believe the fraternity was Phi Sig?  One of my buddies was completely wasted (football player), and ended up using the house phone to prank call 911, and hung up after they answered, not thinking that they could easily trace it to the residence.  Police officers then showed up within minutes, and many of us stayed as silent as possible in a hidden room in the house, which they were easily able to find.  Every single individual under the age of 21 was arrested and brought to jail that night and put in orange jumpsuits...except for me lol.  The officer administering the breathalyzer did my test twice, as it came up 0.00 (or however it is configured), as he didn't believe the reading, with everyone else in the house very drunk.  Everyone around me started clapping, as at least one of us wasn't going to jail, and then let me walk out the front door back to my dorm room.  A few of the guys tied to the house that were over 21 asked me how I got away as I exited the building, and I simply said, 'I didn't drink today' lol.  Two of my friends (including my roommate/best friend/teammate & the football player/prank caller) did end up running as the officers showed up, and temporarily got away, but they were able to easily find them based on tips from others that were being taken to jail. My roommate was actually hiding in his closet for the next hour, until he finally came out when the officers kept coming back to our dorm room.  The funny thing about how he was identified, is that we had a few whiteboards on our dorm room door, and my roommate had earlier done caricatures of each of our friends, the 'Brandt Hall Gangstaz,' and he was a pretty good artist :).

Paul/Pgmado, was this before or after you showed up as an RA on the other side of our floor? :)

This was the first weekend that I was a student on campus. It effectively crippled the Phi Sig fraternity for several years. I remember it being the front page story of The Torch. I just remember thinking "Wow, Concordia never had anything fun like this happen." I became a RA the next semester in Brandt Hall. The semester of the Brandt Hall fire that I put out.

Ah, yes.  The previous RA on your side of the floor, probably left because of us lol.  On another night, my roommate/friend (you remember who he is) ended up drunkenly urinating on his/your dorm room door.  Even worse, the RA opened the door mid-stream, and got it on his shoes.  Lots of fun stories that I could tell :).

Never heard that story, but then I lived in Alumni, where a few guys on 4West were kicked out for having a stripper in the 4th floor lobby, or so I was told. Wasn't invited, so I didn't care.

The only reason why we'd have the metallic gray/grey is the Nike contract. Nike loves marketing stupid uniform designs, especially at schools like Baylor and Oregon. I mean doesn't the Oregon football team have 7 Billion different uniform combos from jerseys to pants to knee pads, butt pads, arm wraps, helmets, mouth guards, and player underwear? It's out of unnecessary control.

At Oregon it's only because Phil Knight at Nike pays for it.

A nice tax write-off for Knight to Oregon. "I'll give you a crap ton of uniforms and garb for your use in games to market my overpriced shoes and garb."

It's good to see him playing at a level that really tests his ability. After two years in the MVC, he showed that he could have gone High major fresh out of Whitney Young. He's now at a point where the challenges to his growth are going to bring more rewards at DePaul than they would at Valpo, and he would have left after this season anyway. Now he has 3 years to show what he can do to help his draft status with better competition.

The MVC also postponed the Illinois State series for New Year's weekend. This makes the Missouri State series the new MVC opener for us, so we could be 4 games back when we start play in 3 weeks. It will be interesting to see what happens in the MVC today and in the coming weeks.

The Duke women just cancelled the rest of their regular season due to Covid concerns. Will we see some other teams or conferences across men's or women's basketball making the same move before the weekend or 2020 ends?

VUGrad1314, Paul Oren and Luke Gore discuss this same issue EVERY year on the scheduling podcast. Some of these non-D1s end up being an extra game in an MTE that doesn't count against the NET. It isn't always about not getting home-and-homes or guaranteed pay games. There might be 1 or 2 a season like this, where Luke schedules it to just have a game after a tough point in the schedule, or maybe coming out of Finals. These games may not be beneficial, but if they can work in with MTEs, then it saves Luke from filling a scheduling hole with another team they really want to play that might be right during that MTE. Sure, at times these non-D1s are useless, but in a season where we have so many holes in the lineup, offensive execution/scoring, and a lot of young kids on the roster, Valpo can use the non-D1s to benefit the confidence and growth in some of the kids to be able to do more.

This is the same theory for a lot of the mid-majors, because the Power 5 or Super 6 want their own league where they beat each other up, and only play within their six conferences, and those teams battle for tv contracts and the Power 5/Super 6 Tournament on some cable network exclusively. Leaving the mids and lows to the NCAA, where the money wouldn't be anymore, and CBS to help the NCAA keep their history and tournament on tv, but having no Dukes, Kentuckys, UCLAs, Illinois, Michigan State, and Indiana to gather ratings because they would all be playing on ESPN ALL THE TIME!
