Could have been John's decision to hang em up after, what, nine years. Unlike a lot of the younger coaches who might be looking to climb the coaching ladder, John has deep roots in Chesterton (I believe).

JD24

I'm guessing it was Coach Snyder's decision to move on. He creates a void in a couple of fashions. He has to be replaced technically. Can he be replaced emotionally? Players seemed to universally love the guy.

valpofb16

Coach Snyder moving on is to focus on time with his family, nothing more nothing less. Wish him the best.

FWIW it appears that QB Ryan Markoff has transferred to Bluffton University.

3-7 last season, likely a playing time move. Wish him the best

valpotx

Playing a sport is great, but academics are huge for someone that doesn't have professional ability.  Maybe my view is because of my job, and no offense to Bluffton, but how will Bluffton University appear on a resume, versus Valparaiso University?

TX, between you and me as EX-athletes, can we agree that about the age of 20 or something, we know that at that age it is about the joy of playing and excelling and often the prestige of a degree is lost in the desire to just play the game wherever that might wind up being. You, me and most of us have the wonderful capacity of looking back, and I bet both you and I can cite specific decisions we made that had we had another 10 years of wisdom we would not have made. But like you and me, he needs to be wished well.

On the other hand, I really believe in the mantra: "Things happen for a reason and there are no coincidents."  And I'm sure he will find a great life after his playing career is over.  But I also am willing to bet  he will also wonder what if............

valpotx

I was confronted with this same decision when I was in school, as I didn't recover from Tommy John surgery to the level that I pitched previously.  Most of my time was played on the JV, whereas I would have easily been a solid contributor with the varsity before my surgery.  I had a talk with my father around what I should do after my JR/SO year (medical redshirted FR year), and my options were to continue to play baseball against JuCo/Community College/D2/D3 teams as a top JV Pitcher/contributor, or take a step down to D3 at another solid academic institution, but get to be a key contributor in true NCAA competition that counts in the record books.  It was a hard decision, but I felt that the Valpo degree/name recognition would serve me better long-term.  The main difference in scenarios is that I had the option to keep playing baseball against other college players/talent, just at a lower level while wearing the Valpo jersey, whereas Football does not have that option.

I am very glad that my father sat me down to talk about what it would mean for me to transfer to a lesser known school, just to feed my pride.  I've definitely gotten my fill of baseball over my life, as I have continued to play competitively to my current age of 37, and am only now thinking about retirement lol.

Attaching our own goals and experiences to that of another is a path we probably should avoid with the many variables, particularly the unknown, which may have gone into this decision.

We have 0 punters and 1 kicker. We need this position filled...

Indy, I wonder if this isn't a position upgrade for the football program. i believe (but I could be way off base here) that Coach Snyder was a PT coach with primarily on-field duties while he continued to teach in Chesterton (?).  This job description is FT and expands into NCAA compliance and recruiting in addition to on-field ST coaching duties.

And, yes, we do need a punter and backup kicker.

All coaches must be well versed in compliance. Coach Snyder would have done all of what the requirements are excepting (I think) the recruiting aspect of the job. I don't think he was involved in that much, if at all, at Valpo. In terms of on the field and locker room, they'll have to go some to equal what he brought to the team. Likely they'll end up with a much younger coach who will be unlikely to bring the maturity to the job which Coach Snyder brought.

....and we are a hammy from no kickers or punters.

Not sure this will help or hurt recruiting, but we will open against Eastern Kentucky on August 29"

The Colonels and Valparaiso have met four times with EKU holding a 3-1 edge in the series. The first meeting was in 1945. The most recent match-up came in 2015 when Eastern Kentucky beat the Crusaders 52-10 in the 2015 season opener.

Based on twitter, Weekly is not committed and Goodwin is committed to Valpo.

M

Bubba Johnson is a nice player with loads of potential. He as a teammate who is also very good at football Paris Hernandez.  I'm not sure either could afford to attend Valpo unless they landed some serious non athletic scholarship money or unless if they are in the 21st Century program.  Know them both, very nice kids.

You left out TE (I think).

Big needs at WR and TE.

valpofb16

JD24 you are right

I believe the tight end will be a competition between RSSO's Bittner and Kluck

Kluck played 7, Bittner played 11

Definitely an area to watch in recruiting

Dixon also had an offer from Butler.  This kid is smart (3.79 GPA, 31 ACT) and very strong.  Could easily develop into an all conference lineman and, is already a Crusader!!  Shell should be a very good athlete as LB as he played both quarterback and running back in high school.

When you say "is already a Crusader" do you mean he is already enrolled?
