Wheaton drops football

Wheaton College announced today it is going to drop football. Keep in mind this is a school whose teams are routinely ranked in the Div III top 20 poll and, I believe, played in the D3 title game just a few years ago. Paul

Amazing. And as a D3 don't face the expenses and scholarship issues that we do. My guess is the alumni will be upset and that ultimately, as did Evansville, they will regret this decision.

I met an alum who was representing Wheaton at a college fair. If we are talking about the same Weaton, with about 900 all males, in southern Indiana, then it isn't happening. This alum scoffed at the idea.

Wabash College is all male, but not in southern IN. Hanover is in southern IN, but not all male. Wheaton College in IL still has a football team. Wheaton College in MA does not.

Ah, that makes more sense to me. The program I am familiar with and the one I thought was being discussed was Wheaton College in Illinois.

OK, sorry, the guy I spoke with was from Wabash--NOT Wheaton! By the way, the "Little Giants" aren't dropping football, they are all male--about 900 strong and are located in Connersville? Somewhere near there anyway.

Wabash College is in Crawfordsville, Indiana...not Connersville. They won a National Championship, or were in the title game just a couple of years ago, so I would be surprised if they are dropping football, but you might be right. I have an uncle who used to be on their board, I'll have to ask him if they are indeed doing so......by the way, the Monon Bell game between Wabash and Depauw is one of the great football rivalries in college football...it is a fun weekend and eventhough it's not big time football, the rivalry is HUGE......

Just to clear this up.....

Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts is dropping football. Wheaton was an all-female college from 1834 until 1988 when it began enrolling men and started a football team. Alumni of the Wheaton College Lyons include Lesley Stahl of CBS News, Barbara Richardson, the first lady of New Mexico, the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Chris Denorfia an outfielder for the San Diego Padres and Christine Todd Whitman, former governor of New Jersey and former administrator of the EPA.

Wabash College is in Crawfordsville, IN (not Connersville-home of Butler's Matt Howard. Connersville is in east central Indiana) Crawfordsville is between Indianapolis and Danville, IL just off I-74. Also Wabash is not dropping football.

Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana which is on the Ohio River northeast of Louisville is not dropping football. Hanover is just west of Madison, Indiana-home of former Valpo player Logan Jones-currently at Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas. Hanover plays an annual football game with Franklin College (which Valpo football played this past season) called the Victory Bell game.

Wheaton College of Wheaton, Illinois, a west central suburb of Chicago, is a 4 year Christian liberal arts college that is also not dropping football.

I'm still confused! What league did the Wheaton College Lyons play in? They don't google well.

I guess I'm also alittle confused now. The Wheaton College in Illinois isn't 4 years old as we were told, but actually was formed in 1860. They aren't dropping football.

78crusader started this and should straighten it out!!

It doesn't say "4 years old". Wheaton College (IL) is a 4 year institution, as opposed to a junior college or 2 year school.

There is too much misreading and misleading in this thread. Since 78crusader started this thread, and he has posted about Wheaton College (IL) in the past, most of us assumed that the Wheaton College that was dropping football was the IL school. The rest is somewhat comical.

Funny! Jokes aside, I guess it is basically known as a 4-year liberal arts college. But, almost 20% of their student body are graduate students.

I was looking over the Wheaton College (ILLINOIS) Thunder athletics website when I noticed that Wheaton had something not many other schools have ever had in the Div.3 ranks.

Wheaton has 2 alums that have played against each other in the NFL. Andy Studebaker of the Chiefs and Pete Ittersagen of the Titans met on the field in Kansas City during the 2010 season.
