excellent to hear, thanks!  (if only he'd started off the second term (against Loyola Jan 2) so well :) )

Any internet live video of the University Games? Especially would like to see the US matchup. Is Dellavadova playing for the Boomers? Saw that he will be on Cavs summer league team.

Australians go undefeated 5-0 with win over Nigeria (76-61).

The link earlier in the thread no longer seems to deliver much of anything.

Anyone care to provide some current info for the lazy among us? ;)

What was this opening five game stretch?  Related, or not, to the University Games?  What's the format for the University Games?  (Indeed, any streaming coverage?)

Links to box scores, etc?

Despite an off game for Rowdy (8 points and 2 rebounds) shooting 1-6 from the field and 0-2 from the 3-point line, Australia easily won its first game, beating Czech Republic 85-57:

agibson

That's nothing on the US's 140-46 beat-down of the UAE!

Rowdy started, and in a rather egalitarian division of minutes, played 20.  (The highlight of the box might be 6-6 from the FT line.)

From

it looks like Australia took care of Sweden 70-53 today, but I don't see a box score yet.

The top two teams from each pool advance, so having the US in the pool doesn't need to be a fatal flaw.  Unless Canada's a threat?

valpotx

How are the the WUG teams qualified?  Seeing teams like Oman, UAE, and a few others, it almost seems like they are just trying to expand the game globally, rather than some type of qualification process.

No given that Australia will advance ahead of Canada.  Canada has three high quality D1 players (Heslip, Pangos and Ejim).  At least Wiggins decided in early June that he was not going to play on their WUG team.

I'm hearing Rowdy had a better game and was one of the high scorers with 11 points against Sweden.

agibson

He led Australia with 27 minutes against Sweden.  2nd in points, T1 in defensive rebounds, etc.

I guess one could compare to the Canada-Sweden game, where Canada's margin of victory was similar

I've tried looking around for the qualification standards, but I'm not finding anything. All I can think is that if the country supports a team, they get in? I'd have to agree that the World University Games is a way to globalize a lot of sports that want exposure to other countries in an amateur format, like an AAU-style setup to get kids interested in sports that you can't seem to find on U.S. tv because no one wants to cover anything beyond men's basketball on ESPN.

agibson

Australia fell to Canada 92-83.

Looks to have been something of an off-game for Rowdy.  I suppose we can hope that he was a focal point of their defense?

Looks like Australia did hold a narrow lead at the start of the 4th quarter.

Here's one write-up
http://islandsportsnews.net/component/content/article/4-basketball/7954-strong-finish-pushes-canada-past-australia

With this loss, probably Australia needs to beat the US to advance?  (Or to get a little help, in the form of a Canada loss somewhere else, etc.)

vu84v2

Hard for Australia to win when Ryan goes 1-9 from the floor and Cody Ellis (SLU) goes 1-7.  Arrgghh.  Lets hope for a good showing against the US.

valpotx

For Rowdy only, not Australia, then I will agree  :)

Good for Rowdy, but a bad loss for the US.  I imagine that they overlooked the Aussies

Also, '72, at the beginning of the 4th quarter, Rowdy will hit two 3s, taking them from down 3 to up 3 and a lead they would never relinquish.

You may now resume being the happiest you've ever been about the USA losing.

Well, looking at the bright side, at least I won't be biting my fingernails!  ;)  I wonder how many USA guys have a shot at the NBA (other than McDermott)

Yay Rowdy, Go Aussies!!

wh

The USA has 15 times more people than Australia.  We have the most intricate and sophisticated player development system in the world.  We are a basketball and sports crazed people.  While this USA team may not have some of our best-of-the-best college players, it is still loaded with 4 and 5 star players from some of the best collegiate programs we have.  I don't know whether to be impressed with the Aussies or embarrassed for us.  A little of both I suppose.

Of course, like everyone I'm thrilled for Ryan!

valporun

Just saw Ryan ice the game for the Aussies. The US just looked like they were thugs, playing like they are used to stateside with all the hard fouls and getting called for fouls in Russia that they don't always get called for here. The US roster had Doug McDermott, Yogi Ferrell, Patrick Hancock, and a few others that I missed in how fast and unaware the announcers seemed to be.

The US needs to really outscore the Canadians and hold them to a low point total, as the point differential now becomes a factor as both the US and Aussies sit at 3-1.

LaPorteAveApostle

#174
if that is true about point differential, then we have to root for Canada for Australia to advance.

(OR:  the not-all-that-unlikely possibility of Canada's loss margin and Australia's rout of UAE to total 105 points.

say the US wins by 20, then Australia needs to win by 85.  impossible you say?  US and Canada each beat UAE by 94.  In that case, US would only have to win by 11, by my math.

yeah, i guess i like that better than rootin' for canooks.)
