I like your attitude, footballfan.  Please know that not all of us on this board are bashers of the football program.  I have maintained from the start that Coach C has this program on the right track and that he is the right person for this job.  He has turned other programs around and he will do the same with this program.  Tell your son to keep working hard and it will pay off.  Thanks for your post.  Paul

Sports Talk / Wheaton drops football
March 24, 2011, 03:22:33 PM
Wheaton College announced today it is going to drop football. Keep in mind this is a school whose teams are routinely ranked in the Div III top 20 poll and, I believe, played in the D3 title game just a few years ago. Paul

In the several years I have been on the VU fan forum, there have only been two posts that really disappointed me.  The first was reading how, in President Heckler's first year, a football coach up in the press box was tossing f bombs during several moments of poor VU play during the homecoming game.  The second was tonight, after reading govalpogo's post about the players' actions and attitudes the night before the Iona game.  If true (and I have no reason to think it is not true), then this reflects very, very poorly on our players.  They seem to have no appreciation for the fans or the athletic department of this university (where they are receiving a free education), which spent a precious $60,000 of athletic department money to host this game so that our guys would have a chance to compete for a championship.  Just ask our AD how much $60,000 means to our athletic budget.  It will be a long time before VU hosts another one of these games.

So, VU72, I gather from your summary that the Chapel will not undergo the 27 million dollar renovation...so what impression were you left with insofar as the Chapel renovation is concerned?  What will likely be done?  Did you get the feeling that an addition would definitely be part of the renovation?  (I can only presume the addition would be on the south side of the narthex, that is, to the right when you walk in the front doors.)

I'm glad he reaffirmed the importance of the football program to VU.

Guys, could we give this year's edition of Crusader football a chance before we begin the non-stop criticism?  Coach Carlson has turned other programs around...he will do the same here.  It's just going to take some time.  Paul

So, has anyone attended one of President Heckler's talks?  If so, would you care to share some of the highlights with us?  Thanks, Paul

Valpo Basketball / Re: CIT Scores

I hope tonight's crowd is a good one.  If it is not, however, keep in mind that last night, at least according to the Des Moines Register, Creighton drew around 4,000 in the 17,000-seat Qwest Center.  Northern Iowa drew just over 3,000 in its 7,000 seat gym.  And Evansville drew a tad over 1,200 fans for its game.

I am not optimistic that he will stay at VU.

I also think that leaving now would be a decision he would later regret.

Just a gut feeling, on both counts.

Hope I'm wrong as far as #1 is concerned.

Did I see somewhere that they hope to have the building done -- and occupied -- by the time classes start next January?  If so, that tells me that maybe the administration has plans to knock down Huegli next spring and then start on the new dorm that I understand will be going in that spot.  Perhaps President Heckler will address this during one of his upcoming talks.  VU72, are you going?  If so, can you (or anyone else on this board) fill us in on what President Heckler had to say?  Thanks, Paul  ps and maybe you can ask him when the new track will be installed!  We've waited long enough!

I like the picture of O.P.  I got to sit next to him at a football game for about a quarter -- I was a little boy then, maybe 7 years old, around 1963.  He seemed larger than life.  Paul

Okinawa,

Is there a web cam for the new academic building going up next to the library?  Thanks, Paul
