so...a 3-star, but one with glowing comments from the then-director of National Scouting for ESPN...and can't get more than 1 ppg for Rice?  What gives?

Not to answer my own questions, but--well, Paul Oren might have for me:

"the fact that it took this long for the announcement to come means that either Harris didn't really want to go or that he's having a hard time finding a landing spot."

what are you referring to?

Given that the above is largely true...does the timing strike anyone else as strange?

Why not announce earlier (like Richie/Hrvoje) and be more "available", especially if he was so seemingly disgruntled before then?  Dance cards are filling up around the country.  It would seem to have more options, to declare a month ago would have been the time.

I can't help but feel there is something more to the story, something Lazerus seems to want to get at in his blog, but that Harris won't bite at...

I gotta say, that's why I didn't post the new eligibility graphic, although I thought it was because we would be adding one soon, not subtracting.

I guess that's the way of the world.  Chef, any suggestions as to the taker?

Is this "recruiting" post a post for any and all recruiting or just kids in a certain year, etc.?

While we're at it, I plan on having a (hair) growth spurt.

Valpo Basketball / Re: Women's Basketball Coach

Quote from: bbtds on April 20, 2012, 01:12:58 PMYes, we could hire a male coach with the first name Adam(s), Scott, Richard(s)on), or Gerard(ot) but I think the wise decision would be to hire a female coach who would get in her Carr and beat it down to Valpo and make the Call-Away from the pressure, on some of these recruits. Some think the AD is taking 2 Lang(e) to make a decision. Would it really help if the decision were made by Komara? This new coach could Varner a little momentum and bring some hope if only a Timmer, man that would help. What a Ray of sunshine that would be. Some believe that this team will be sHort-on players if we don't get going on recruiting soon. First names of coaches are plentiful, Jan's one.

I had to kirby enthusiasm when I saw this. I think you did a gray job, and that your puns are a boone to the board, but you can have more material when you use the other part of their names, sur.

I think I will sit on it a little while longer, if 'tis OK with you, O4 and Matt, since there's that one open slot sitting there that I have a feeling Bryce will fill.  After all, he'll still have four other slots open the year after even with the two commits already coming in.

If it seems he will keep it in his hip pocket for next year, then I'll send it to Matt.

What about a tentative "depth chart", a la football, for "1"s through "5"s crossed against the eligibility chart?  Too esoteric or helpful?

(ie roughly
1
E Buggs
L Dority
2
Will Bogan
etc.
#4412
tweaked it a little...what would you like me to do with it?  here vs main page, xls vs jpeg etc?
#4413
I did it in excel...how could we make it "editable"?

Not to mention immune to defacing by bulldogs with IBS...

Quote from: lowposter on April 17, 2012, 06:08:39 PMSo, is there one scholarship left?  I have lost count.

lowposter

Yes--according to the scholarship chart and eligibility thingie there are 12 on roster for next year.
#4415
I hope I'm not stepping on Matt's toes, but after my last effort at helping the blog was indifferently received, I tried to think of a way to be more helpful.

This is my first attempt at an Eligibility chart...this is assuming both Dority and Coleman are more-or-less-immediately eligible.

Please do give feedback.  I'd have attached the file itself if it would let me.  Thanks.

To add one further point on UDM--they graduate just two starters from their NCAA game, but 54% of the minutes, and four of the top six players (in terms of minutes) from that game:
http://espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=320762305

If the new guys aren't good, it'd be for McCallum as if Bryce ended up with Jason Jenkins instead of Bill & Bob ;)

Quote from: vuweathernerd on April 15, 2012, 02:23:07 PMisn't minnerath going for a medical redshirt and to play this coming season

he could pull a Tonagel/MacPherson--and that would be slightly more scary--but it's not a done deal yet.

if and when that happens, and their incoming bigs turn out to be Holman sans attitude...well, yeah, that would be scary.

Quote from: zvillehaze on April 15, 2012, 10:03:44 AMA couple of Valpo mentions in this article also.http://blogs.indystar.com/recruitingcentral/2012/04/15/news-and-notes-from-indyball-shootout/

Namely:  "Mooreville's Jacob Johnson is probably a bit under-the-radar at this point, but college coaches are starting to find out about the 6-6 left-handed rising junior. Johnson said Valparaiso, Evansville, Indiana State, Butler, Xavier and Purdue have been in contact and he hopes to visit Butler and Valparaiso this spring. The college interest is all relatively new for Johnson, who averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore. Didn't get to see him shoot much from the perimeter, but very athletic."

Nice to see that of the interested parties, we get one of two visits from this class of 2014 forward.  And the same thing is true of the next guy:

"Fishers point guard Jaylon Brown, who plays with [Maverick] Morgan on the Martin's Wolverines, said Illinois and Minnesota are showing new interest and that he plans to make a visit to Valparaiso soon. USC and Dayton have also made contact. The 6-foot Brown has offers from American, Evansville, Ohio and Toledo. Brown said Butler has also still been showing interest."

see our colors gleam.

I'm not that worried about Detroit, because even with McCallum, they lose almost everyone else of note:  no more Minnerath, no more Holman, no more Chase Simon, no Donavan Foster or LaMarcus Lowe.  So good luck with that.  By my math, they lose over 60% of their minutes played for the season; put another way, they lose 50% of the minutes from the HL championship game and we lose 8% (Edwards).  So, Jason, the only thing that really scares me about you is your last name--Calliste.

Unless you're afraid of Juwan Howard, Jr., and nobody was except WMU fans ;) HEYO

Valpo Basketball / Re: Jeff Goodman's Transfer List
March 29, 2012, 04:52:30 PM
He was no less than exactly what we needed at that time, you're exactly right.

I'm from Valpo, but have been in Southwest Florida for a couple years now, and leaving here is sometimes like going off of a prescription drug...the withdrawals are hard.  Just had a brilliant girl leave St. Mary's College and come back here because she couldn't handle not just the cold, but the lack of the sun--I used to think Seasonal Affective Disorder was a made-up thing.  That, plus missing family...that's a tough combo.

I guess it would be easy to say it's the most surprising/damaging transfer since...well...Wood.  Hope we handle it as well as the other.

carry on, my hayward son.  don't listen to anyone who said you're noredy for the job.

Quote from: IndyValpo on March 29, 2012, 03:02:54 PMHis name was Ralph Simmerman out of New Palestine, IN.  I am not sure where he ended up.  I would have guessed that was during the Tom Smith era.  We also had a 6-11 kid from Elkhart and a think an Arkansas JUCO named Peter Van Dyke that never showed up.

Thanks for that!  That's good to know some neurons are still firing somewhere.  The ghost of John Becher thanks you :)

Yeah, that's a bummer about Edwards, but hey, getting a transfer (and I include JUCO in that) is like getting a date with a hot girl--she's been elsewhere before and she could go elsewhere just as easily.  Can't say they didn't warn you :/
