Valpo is ranked #10/11 in the PFL coaches preseason poll.  Catrine and Nunes mentioned as leaders.  QB issues highlights the writeup.

Soph Griffin Norberg named to the preseason All-PFL team at FB:

This is the Valpo Athletics release:

Only 3 WR on the single team, so Catrine didn't make it.  Sporadic and inconsistent QB play ls a factor I am sure.  Though Nunes received HM at the end of last season, he did not make the cut here.  Both have  some motivation going now.

One small error in the article. Frank is going into his junior year not soph.

I'd love it if the 2016 team could win enough to make me feel like there is a remote chance of an upset of Montana to start 2017.  Bowl eligible, 6 wins would be fantastic.  Beat Trinity International, Davidson, Morehead St., Stetson, Butler and Jacksonville (I hope it's unusually cold that day for those Floridians).

Sorry, in the FCS, there is no such thing.  Only the top 32 FCS teams get an invite to the FCS playoffs.  The PFL gets one (1) automatic bid as the #32 ranked team (and a lot of good FCS scholarship teams who miss out on a bid complain about that).

But point well taken --- 6 wins would be no less than spectacular given everything that is piled up against us (see all the previous + /-  analysis on this board).

Well, that may backfire as we have 18 Florida kids on our Roster!!  By then though, their blood will have thickened significantly!!

I was amazed as I went through our team to find that we have players from 19 states with only Illinois having more players than Florida!!

4 wins would exceed expectations.
I tend to agree with the four wins would exceed expectations.  Massey has us winning two (Trinity, Davidson), with a shot at Stetson.  Anything could happen at home with Drake, Butler and Jacksonville.

Last year in the PFL we won at Davidson by 7, and lost the rest by an average of more than 26.  We kept Morehead St within 7, but all of the other games were by more than 20.  We really need at least 2 PFL wins this year, and another 3-4 PFL games within 10 points.

I was on campus today. Bunch of players around. Lots of excitement.

I would really like to see these guys have a decent season - I think Cecchini is a decent coach who needs talented and confident players.

2016 pre-season camp is officially under way.  Good luck Crusaders.

Should have downloaded the roster into a spreadsheet to compare the roster after the first question is answered.

"Who didn't show up?"

Vince Mcpherson #8  outside linebacker/snake  did not report to camp

I'm well aware of the FCS v. FBS differences.  I typed bowl eligible as a tongue in cheek comment to communicate my desire for an over-.500 season.

Last year as a redshirt freshman, the defensive staff was pretty high on him.  He is listed as 6-1, 200 and I believe he started many games at the Snake (OLB)position and was always on the 2-deep chart..

Here's his 2015 Bio: Saw action in nine games for the Crusaders as a sophomore ... tallied 18 tackles, including 2.5 for loss ... recorded three QB hurries on the year, tied for second-most on the team ... opened season with three tackles, a QB hurry and a tackle for loss Sept. 3 at Eastern Kentucky ... registered career-best seven tackles, including four solo stops, Nov. 14 against Morehead State.

Anyone know why he was a no-show?

I would hope that as these go up, a player's financial aid package would increase accordingly.

Remember, players don't get financial aid packages in football. All financial aid is based on academics or need, not on whether or not they played football.

62 - what is the current tuition and R&B at Valpo?

2014-2015 numbers:

Tuition    $35,030
Gen. Fee    1,130
Room        6,400
Board        4,120
Total       $46,680

That was a couple of years ago. With books etc., the total now is around 50k.  Currently the Valpo.edu site says tuition is up to 36,160.  However, 94% receive some financial aid.

Looked at the 2016 Football roster.  105 players, 40 true freshman and 15 redshirt freshman.  6 QB, with Stokes and Clarke having taken snaps last year, and 4 Frosh QB's.

Only 8 Seniors.

From the two-deep Jax game, we return most starters on offense, but not QB, RB and one T.  From defense we lose 5 starters, but return almost everyone else from two-deep.

Don't confuse athletic scholarship with financial aid package.  As with non-athlete students, VU is 100% need-based for football (unless a Fb player is so outstanding he merits an academic scholarship).  This is referred to by the financial aid office and the football staff as the student's financial aid package and can be a combination of need-based grants, federal loans, campus jobs, etc.  Each year, as fees etc. rise, the financial aid office should review each financial aid package to ensure that the package is keeping up with any changes in the cost of attendance.

I am aware that  some schools offer enticing freshman year financial aid packages to get the student to enroll.  Then in subsequent years reducing the aid packages while hoping the student will find a way to stay matriculated despite incurring added financial hardship.  That practice is really sleazy.

The QB from the Jax game wasn't the starter all year long. Ryan Clarke was the defacto starter and, at this point, is likely to start again this year particularly early. He was injured for Jacksonville. There's a couple of the freshman giving it a shot but I doubt they'll be ready to take over from day one. No WRs were lost who matter, Jarrett Morgan is back at RB and I think Grayson is also back out there. The OL is full of returnees many of whom played at least some last year. HB/TE are ably filled as well with returnees.

Frankly, the QB play will determine how the offense goes this year. Can't be misreads and missing wide open receivers.

Saw the scrimmage yesterday. OK I guess. Breakdowns on defense which need to get cleaned up. Biggest issue to me was the guys in jerseys on the sidelines. Didn't look like little nicks either. I'll leave that to the staff to discuss if they choose to.
