Women's Tennis Coach Bob Modesto has retired and Bowling coach John Martin left to start a new program at LeMoyne in New York.

Both did a pretty good job. The tennis team finished with their most wins in 20 years.

These openings may allow others who might have been replaced to survive another season.

Perhaps.  The more I marvel at the terrible results in sports like women's golf and baseball, the more it becomes clear that the thinking is probably something like..."we don't pay non-revenue sport coaches very well and if they don't get arrested for something we're just going to be happy they continue to fill the student seats with good kids who are also good students". There just isn't any other explanation.  When one opens then some effort goes into finding a good replacement but my guess is that pay will only allow for a person who is local or near by or is looking to pad their resume for a bit by adding being a head coach at a D1 school.  I think the "local/part time" role fit Modesto and certainly fits McCoy. Martin had other jobs in the administration so the combo probably made the pay acceptable.

Agreed on your take-although there has to be better options out there than Mccoy...I mean even dorf on golf would produce better...Baseball also is at an all time low

Baseball has always been a weird spot to me. No ticket sales. No concessions. So theoretically no revenue coming in from the program aside from buy games which likely go straight to operations costs.

NWI is an area with a lot of rich baseball talent and baseball history. Its interesting that they just havent been able to recruit it or get a lot decent seasons strung together.

That being said, the guys on that team are some great folks who clearly care about the sport and the school. I would be interested to hear from someone who knows a little more about what goes on on the other side of sturdy road

IMO, the sad thing is that Valpo is the ideal DI landing spot for “olympic sports” athletes, both male and female. Golf, Tennis, Bowling, XC & Track, Swimming, etc., it is a super place to compete at the DI level while earning a degree at a well-regarded, nationally recognized  university that has a beautiful campus and a solid, value-centered culture. It’s not about the full-rides, it’s about great coaches attracting great kids

If you want to attract more students (and we most certainly do) you put some of your money where  you are attracting our kind of kid to compete at a higher level.

I’ve said this before. And Mens Golf is the current model. Modesto was right in there as well.

Hosmer needs to hire replacements who will take what we have and immediately take their teams to the next level. Good candidates will require a decent salary and should be full-time  — duh, we are supposedly Division I.

Yeah, these teams might not get to the NCAAs (right away)  but they will be major players in the overall rise to excellence.

Put that together with excellence in our few majors and you have a very attractive recruiting profile.

Swimming and T&F seem to be doing much better than previous years for sure. Not sure if its coaching or better recruits.Softball could only get better from the mess previously.Tennis is definitely on the right trajectory and hopefully continues.Volleyball we know is the gold standard for VU athletics.Have great expectations for mens basketball .The others are either on a downward spiral or so bad that it needs a complete overhaul.

Though our record is bad this season, there have been a lot of 1 run results, and we always seem to come out on the wrong end of such results.  I like Coach Schmack, but believe this is likely his last season, and that Hosmer will want to bring in her own coach.  We have the potential to be a solid team, as Evansville and Murray State have shown that the MVC can prepare you well for the NCAA tourney.  We've had prior success, and always have good athletes, but pitching has often been our weakness.  We'll have a few good pitchers each year, and then some folks that struggle.  Even when I was playing 20 years ago, this was the case.

I continue to believe that in spite of the challenges at Valpo, that with the right coach, great things can happen.

Witness UIC winning the Valley baseball tournament. To far north, too many road games, blah blah blah. If UIC can do it, Valpo can too.

Then there is Eastern Michigan, you know, that perennial power in women’s golf, right up there with Stanford, Oklahoma State and Texas, right? Nope. But at the moment they finished fourth and thus will qualify for tomorrow’s match play.
So yes, IT CAN BE DONE! But finishing dead last requires something, anything, beyond the status quo. The coaches bus tour is in early June. Everyone on the bus has once again gained the AD’s confidence.

Watching the Valpo coaches tour and no mention of Jill McCoy! She is still listed as the women ‘s golf coach on the site however. There is hope?

She just announced a new freshman recruit today, so it would appear she is back
