It’s a more serious question than one might think. Recruiting is a year round effort. As Homer Drew once stated…”recruiting is like shaving. Miss a day and you look like a bum!”
And so as our volleyball coach remains missing, recruits no doubt are wondering who they might be playing for or might it be?? Not a good situation.
I cannot believe that our School has yet to respond to her missing in action! What's going on? Paul, where are you? It is time that SOMEONE from the University responds and lets the fan base, including financial supporters, know what is going on! This is ridiculous! They are handling this like a small Division 3 school who is lacking in every public relations area and don't know what they are doing. Come on, Valpo! Get your act together!

What the heck happened?
Carin Avery, the winningest and longest-tenured coach at VU who signed a contracted extension less than a year ago, doesn't just walk away from her team 6 matches into the year.
There can really only be two options here:
1. She took a job somewhere else or is about to
2. There's some sort of very serious allegation / investigation that the AD can't cover for (even with success as the head of the program factored in)
There just isn't a third option based on the circumstances (let me know if I'm missing it). No one's buying the "the timing feels right for us to move forward into this next season of our lives" 6 matches into the year.
So as usual, apparently contracts in college sports mean nothing. That is, if either Carin or Valpo are held harmless regarding her contract extension. As was the case with Charles Small, there is more to the story and I doubt any of us will ever know what actually happened.
My guess is the bulk of the team will head to the exits and a new coach will be named and we start from scratch. What a mess.

Beyond what @804union mentioned (including a job elsewhere or some hidden allegation), I see three other possibilities:
1) There was something promised by the AD or the University that was not delivered (outside of Coach Avery's contract). For example, the AD promised a certain amount of NIL money for Volleyball recruiting this year, and then it was not available. (Perhaps, a donor made a promise to the AD, then the donor did not deliver? What would the AD do in that case if the money was not available as expected?)
2) There could reasonably be financial situation that changed. Although we do not know Coach Avery's salary under the contract extension, the last financial statements from the University do not show her listed among the highest paid University employees, so her salary was below $200K / year. (Coach Powell was the only coach listed among the highest paid employees, at around $550K/year). It would not be impossible for either her or her husband to be offered a raise, new position or engagement with a family business be more financially attractive that has nothing to do with VU?
3) Some other family circumstance changed - perhaps there was an imminent health issue that would prevent Coach Avery from fulfilling her contract, either for her or a close family member. This would change the circumstance, making it difficult or impossible for her to coach and continue the recruiting activity that is necessary to be successful.
The bottom line is that we do not know, and we may not know. Yet we should refrain from assigning blame from a distance unless we have facts.
Before we start pointing fingers and blame on the situation, let's relax and let the facts come out before some heavy, maybe un-warranted criticisms are made. Let's not let the mouth speak before the mind works.

The reason why these were originally considered but immediately thrown out are 1 & 2, no matter how bad, she wouldn't leave the team in season; this would be handled during the off-season. As for 3, health issues are usually addressed head-on and don't take a week-plus to announce (happen often enough so there is lot of precedent) plus nothing was mentioned at all in statement. Finally, look at the language used in the announcement by the university and Carin's message:
Decided to part ways" is the standard euphemism for an involuntary separation with a negotiated exit. Voluntary departures get "steps down," "retires," or "accepted a position at.
Look at the two statements; they contradict each other in substance while agreeing in tone. The school says "we decided to part ways." She says this is her next chapter. Both can appear only in a coordinated, jointly reviewed release, which strongly implies a separation agreement with mutual non-disparagement. She got to frame it as a choice; the school got a quiet exit and no details
Well, something has been brewing for sometime, given that she didn't participate in the coaches bus tour this summer. I wouldn't want to imply that Coach Avery did anything wrong but just for fun, let's do a hypothetical as follows:
School A finds some issues with misappropriation of funds, for, as an example, recruiting travel. An investigation ensues. Questions are raised and both parties lawyer up. School A cannot allow Coach B to continue as his/her contract has been violated. Because of the long standing nature of Coach B and possible damage to the reputation of both School A and Coach B, the parties agree to "part ways".
